Learning a new language as an expat

Moving Abroad Without Speaking the Language: Expat Tips

Moving abroad is exciting, nerve-wracking, and full of surprises, and one of the biggest challenges is not speaking the local language. Whether you’re moving for work, love, or a change of pace, it can feel overwhelming to navigate daily life when you’re not fluent, or even conversational. But don’t despair, you’re not alone. And the good news is: you can thrive while learning as you go!

How to Learn the Language

You don’t need to be fluent on day one, but it would be a huge expat mistake to not learn the language at all.

Start with the basics, apps like Duolingo, Babbel, or Memrise can help you pick up useful words and phrases quickly. But don’t stop there. Sign up for a local language course, in person or online to get through the grammar, and join a conversation group to put it all into practice while meeting new people.

Practice whenever you can. The more you practice, the more you’ll feel confident and make progress. Many expats find they learn faster by chatting with locals over coffee than sitting in a classroom. Flashcards are great, but real-life interaction is gold. You’ll get real insider expressions and a lot more context and a real cultural immersion.

Set small, achievable goals: like ordering coffee in the language or having a short chat with a neighbor and just getting your message across. Celebrate those moments, this will help you see your progress and stay motivated. They add up faster than you think.

How to Integrate When You Don’t Speak the Language

Integration is more than just vocabulary, it’s about connection, and understanding the local culture. If you’re struggling to communicate, let your curiosity lead the way. Attend community events, join a local sports team, or volunteer. Find cafés, grocery stores and hairdressers locals go to. Body language, smiles, shared experiences go a long way, and will make your expat life much easier.

Listen to conversations at the café, and assimilate expressions as you go. Just a few words in the language will help open up doors, as locals will see you are making an effort to integrate and to get to know their country through more than the usual tourist attractions.

Know you are not alone

Languages are hard, but don’t give up! Connect with fellow expats who’ve been through the same journey, they’ll have great tips and probably a few funny language fails to share. At the same time, don’t shy away from local friendships. People usually appreciate the effort you make, even if you stumble over your words.

Remember: learning a new language as an expat isn’t just about grammar, it’s about building a new life, one word at a time.
